Shiatsu is a finger pressure massage technique from Japan that may help with weight loss. Based on the same premise as acupuncture, shiatsu works with the body's energy pathways, called meridians. As it balances and improves the flow of energy, shiatsu reduces stress and promotes healthy functioning of internal organs, according to Institute for Traditional Medicine director Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D. Consult your physician prior to receiving a shiatsu treatment.

Digestion and Circulation

Shiatsu aids in weight loss by promoting digestive health. It improves circulation of blood and lymph, allowing internal organs to work efficiently, according to Dharmananda. Good digestion is essential for breaking down fats and assimilating nutrients from food. Without proper digestion, your body may trick you into cravings that hinder your weight loss efforts, according to "Yoga Journal."

Better Eating Habits

Excess stress elevates the hormone cortisol, which stimulates eating and converts extra calories into fat, notes Timothy McCall, M.D., in "Yoga Journal." People who turn to eating when under stress may be able to curb the habit by receiving shiatsu treatments to reduce and prevent unnecessary stress.

Maintaining Your Energy

Shiatsu promotes relaxation and uninterrupted sleep. It enhances energy and reduces fatigue, according to shiatsu therapist Lisa Esmonde. Feeling well rested, clear-headed and energetic, you are likely to stay motivated and follow through with a weight loss plan.

Considerations

Shiatsu is not recommended for persons with bruises, skin disease or blood clots. Pregnant women and people who have heart problems need to check with a physician before receiving shiatsu. Ask your doctor if a shiatsu treatment is advisable for you.
