A severe stomach flu can leave the lining of your intestines damaged, even after the viral infection is gone. The stomach flu, medically known as viral gastroenteritis, is not related to the influenza virus, but is caused by various other viruses. Symptoms can persist for up to 10 days and need to be evaluated by your doctor. Like most viral infections, there is no cure for viral gastroenteritis other than increasing your liquid intake, modifying your diet and getting more rest. Talk with your doctor about a recovery diet before implementing changes to your diet.

Stomach Flu

The stomach flu is a viral infection that is spread from human to human contact and from ingesting contaminated water. The condition causes severe diarrhea, inflammation in the intestines, abdominal cramps, vomiting, nausea and a low-grade fever. Most cases of the stomach flu do not require medical intervention and do not cause complications. Viral gastroenteritis can be serious for the elderly, infants or those with immune system disorders. You can prevent the stomach flu by washing your hands often, staying away from people who appear to be sick and disinfecting commonly touched items.

Foods to Avoid

If you had a severe case of the stomach flu, you need to avoid certain foods to help your digestive system repair itself. Foods that are high in sugar, high in fat, contain a lot of fiber, are fried, greasy or are highly processed can cause further digestive irritation. Avoid dairy products, alcohol and beverages that contain caffeine, such as tea, coffee or sodas.

Bulk-Forming Diet

Bulk-forming foods that are easy on the stomach and easy to digest are the best treatment for diarrhea and an upset stomach. Foods that are binding can help form normal stools and promote regularity. Eat white rice, apples, bananas, boiled potatoes, crackers, white toast, cooked carrots, skinless chicken and fish. Consume these foods without adding any condiments, spices or sauces to them. Increase the amount of clear liquids you consume to promote regularity. Dehydration is common from the stomach flu and causes irregular bowel movements.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a recommended food to help heal the lining of the intestines, according to AskDrSears.com. Yogurt contains live and active cultures that cause the body to create more white blood cells that help fight infection and heal soft tissue. Eat 2 cups of plain, low-fat yogurt daily to increase the amount of probiotics in your gut. Avoid eating whole milk yogurt or yogurt that contains added sugar.
