The success of a football play often depends more on a player's ability to accelerate quickly than it does speed or endurance. Your rate of acceleration is how long it takes you to reach your top speed. With appropriate training, you can reach your potential for maximum acceleration. The best players rapidly accelerate to breeze past opponents during a football game.

Offense

An ability to accelerate quickly is vital for an offensive football player. During a passing play, potential recipients must outrun defensive players who try to limit passing options and then tackle the player who successfully catches the ball. An offensive player who reaches the end zone before defenders can catch up is open for a touchdown pass. During a running play, the player with the ball must sprint as fast as possible while executing quick changes in direction and performing body feints to fool defenders. Done correctly, the runner snakes through opponents and quickly outpaces the defensive players in pursuit.

Defense

Acceleration and speed are just as important for defensive players, who try to intercept the ball or tackle offensive players who catch it. Defensive players often cover a particular opponent, so they must be able to match all the movements their opponents make, including fast sprints downfield. If a defensive player cannot accelerate fast enough to keep up with opponents, chances are they will score a touchdown. Defensive linemen who can accelerate quickly can beat opposing blockers off the ball and get to the running back or quarterback.

Drills

While natural talent and ability significantly affect a player's ability to accelerate, it's possible to improve by engaging in rigorous, long-term physical conditioning. Work with an experienced football coach to develop your natural skills and increase your running ability. Typical drills teach players how to start a football play with an effective stance, how to build and use explosive leg power to launch forward and how to maintain proper running form while sprinting with maximum acceleration.

Considerations

Football cleats improve your traction, so your speed and acceleration should increase while wearing them. Some types of cleats pose a safety hazard to other players, so check with your league's regulations to determine what types you may wear. Choose cleats that fit well and provide stable foot and ankle support to maximize your sprinting ability.
