Coumadin is an anticoagulant medication which acts to prevent the formation of clots in the arteries and veins that serve the heart, brain and body. It may also be prescribed after a stroke or heart attack to prevent another one from occurring. This life-saving drug is potent; patients on this medication must be carefully supervised by their doctors to prevent side effects and negative interactions with other drugs and supplements. The Cleveland Clinic advises that vitamin K, E and C, which affect blood clotting should not be consumed while taking Coumadin. Though vitamin B12 is not indicated to react adversely with this drug, it should only be supplemented with the approval of your doctor.
Step 1
Talk to your doctor about how to safely take Coumadin to prevent heart disease, strokes and blood clots. Inform your doctor of all prescription, over-the-counter and herbal medications you are taking. Bring all the bottles or a detailed list to your appointment. Step 2
Take the daily recommended dose of Coumadin. This usual dosage of this medication ranges from 1 mg to 10 mg per day. Your doctor will prescribe that adequate amount for your condition. Tips and Warnings
- Avoid taking vitamin K supplements or foods that are rich in vitamin K in excess.These include green leafy vegetables and canola and soybean cooking oils. This vitamin is required to make blood clotting factors in the liver and hence, interacts adversely with the function of Coumadin.
- Coumadin can serious side effects including excess bleeding in some cases. Inform your dentist that you are taking this blood-thinning medication before any kind of dental procedure, including a regular cleaning. Do not participate in activities such as contact sports that have a high risk of injury. Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking Coumadin.
