Zyprexa Side Effects

Zyprexa, generically known as olanzapine, is a medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. You should not take Zyprexa if you suffer from dementia, because this may lead to heart failure, pneumonia and even death. Zyprexa has other side effects that can affect a wide range of people.

Hyperglycemia

According to Drugs.com, Zyprexa may elevate your blood sugar levels, causing a condition known as hyperglycemia. This can cause appetite loss, increased thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting. You may also experience dry mouth, dry skin and drowsiness. Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects of Zyprexa include intestinal obstruction, stroke, low blood cell counts, osteoporosis and lung edema, says RxList.com. You may also experience hair loss, nose bleeds and changes in your menstruation.

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

Zyprexa use can also lead to neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This is a potentially lethal condition characterized by an altered mental status, muscle rigidity, sweating, irregular heartbeats or acute renal failure, says RxList.com. If you experience these symptoms, you should discontinue this medication under your doctor's supervision. She will treat and monitor your symptoms.

Allergic Reaction

If you are allergic to Zyprexa's ingredients, you may develop trouble breathing, hives and swelling of your face, throat or lips, according to Drugs.com. If this allergic reaction is left untreated, you may go into shock.
