Lovenox, generically sold as enoxaparin, is a blood-thinning medication that prevents blood clots in your legs and heart complications such as a heart attack or chest pain. It should not be combined with aspirin, any other blood thinners or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents because this can result in major bleeding. Spinal or Epidural Hematoma
You can develop a collection of blood in your spine or epidural (within your bony spinal canal) called a hematoma while taking Lovenox, according to RxList.com. This frequently occurs when you get a spinal tap (procedure used to check for such diseases as meningitis) or are injected with anesthetic medication in your spine or epidural space. If this is left untreated, permanent paralysis may result.
Serious Complications
There is a high risk of excessive bleeding with Lovenox. In some instances, this bleeding may be difficult to stop and immediate medical attention is necessary. According to Drugs.com, Lovenox can also lead to easy bruising, pale skin, sudden pain in both legs, headache and visual or balance problems. Chest pain, bradycardia (slow heartbeat) and muscle weakness are other serious side effects.
Low Platelet Count
Lovenox can also lead to a low platelet (substance in your blood necessary to help with wound healing) count, or thrombocytopenia. According to RxList.com, your doctor must closely monitor your platelet levels when you take Lovenox. If your platelet counts dip below 100,000 platelets per cubic millimeter, stop taking Lovenox under your doctor's close supervision.
Overdose
In some instances, you may accidentally take more Lovenox than necessary. Overdose symptoms include nosebleeds, easy bruising or bleeding, blood in your urine or stools or excessive bleeding that won't stop. If you find yourself in this frightening predicament, get medical help immediately.
Effects of Injection
According to RxList.com, Lovenox can lead to pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site. Erythema (redness) and a hematoma can also form. Do not be alarmed if these symptoms develop because they are normal bodily reactions to needle trauma. If the hematoma does not subside within two to three days, notify your doctor.
