Food plays a large role in your health. You may have heard people say, "You are what you eat." Although this is not literally true, to an extent the foods you eat have a direct impact on whether you are in good or bad health. People go on diets and make changes to their diets for a variety of reasons.
Weight Management
One of the most common reasons for going on a diet is to lose weight. Although the recommendations vary, there are guidelines on what is considered a healthy weight. Many factors, such as ethnicity and gender, must be considered to determine what weight is ideal for you. While you may be undecided on whether you are currently at a healthy weight, your physician can help you to identify a target weight and set realistic weight-loss goals.
Medical Conditions
Nearly every medical condition can be impacted, whether positively or negatively, by the foods you eat. Chronic or terminal diseases such as cancer are among those that are easily affected. Eating large amounts of fat, increased amounts of calories and foods with little nutritional benefit can exacerbate symptoms of a medical condition you have been diagnosed with. Your physician can identify foods that should and should not be eaten when you are trying to manage the symptoms of a medical condition. While you may not need to overhaul your current diet, you may need to make adjustments to your diet to improve your symptoms.
Risk of Medical Conditions
In addition to changing your diet because you have been diagnosed with a certain medical condition, your diet can increase your risk for developing certain medical conditions. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension can develop as a result of eating increased amounts of sugar, fat and cholesterol. To decrease your risk, your physician will evaluate your diet and make recommendations on what your diet should consist of.
Self Confidence
In addition to the biological benefits of your diet, you may find that you are not wholly confident with how your body physically looks. The combination of changing your diet and exercising can change the look of your body when implemented consistently and in a healthy manner.
