Lacrosse players use a unique stick to carry and pass a ball up the field to try to score in their opponent's goal. There are three different types of sticks. The type each player uses depends on the position he plays. All players must use sticks that are in compliance with the rules.

Anatomy

The two main components of a lacrosse stick are the shaft and the head. The shaft is a long, hollow handle which players use to grip the stick. It is typically made of aluminum or titanium. The head is attached to the top of the stick. It is roughly triangular in shape with strings or mesh tied to it to form a pocket. This pocket is where the ball sits when a player has possession.

Short Stick

Attackers and some midfielders use a short stick. Short sticks must be between 40 and 42 inches in length. This includes the shaft and head. The circumference of the shaft cannot exceed 3½ inches. At its widest point, the head of the shaft must be between 6½ and 10 inches. In addition, the length of the head, from the outside edge to where it meets the shaft, must be at least 10 inches long.

Long Sticks

Long sticks are used by defenders and some midfielders. The added length makes it easier for defenders to try to knock the ball away from their opponents. A team is allowed a maximum of four players using long sticks at one time, not including the goalie. Long sticks must be between 52 and 72 inches long. The other dimensional requirements of the stick are the same as a short stick: 3½-inch shaft circumference and a head with dimensions of 10 inches long and between 6½ and 10 inches wide.

Goalie Sticks

Goalies have unique sticks that only they are allowed to use. The length of goalie sticks must be between 40 and 72 inches. That means goalies are allowed to have either short or long sticks. The main difference between goalie sticks and those of the other players is in the width. Goalie sticks must be between 10 and 12 inches wide. The wider head gives goalies a better chance at saving their opponent's shots.
