How to Make a Pull-Up Bar

Pull-ups and chin-ups are one of the most comprehensive forms of basic strength training. By incorporating these into your daily workout, you can begin to build a foundation for a rock-hard body. However, not everybody has the time or money to make it to the gym every day. Build a sturdy, safe, effective and long-lasting piece of equipment to give you that upper body you've always wanted, without ever leaving home.

Step 1

Screw two of the T-joints on both sides of the 24-inch pipe.

Step 2

Screw the nipples on the opposite end of each of the two T-joints.

Step 3

Screw the two 45-degree elbows on the ends of the nipples.

Step 4

Screw two of the 6-inch pieces into the 45-degree elbow joints. You now have the front handle to you pull-up bar.

Step 5

Screw the two 3-inch pieces into the remaining perpendicular ends of the T-joints.

Step 6

Screw the remaining two T-joint pieces onto the 3-inch pipe pieces, with the perpendicular end facing outward.

Step 7

Screw the remaining two 6-inch pieces of pipe into the outward facing perpendicular T-joint pieces.

Step 8

Cut the insulation into two 6-inch pieces and wrap them around the two 6-inch pieces of pipe that you just attached. This will cushion the steel pipe against your door frame.

Step 9

Screw the two 5-inch pieces into the remaining T-joint ends.

Step 10

Screw two of the 90-degree pipe elbow joints onto the two 5-inch pieces and face them up.

Step 11

Screw the two 4-inch pieces into the 90-degree elbows.

Step 12

Screw the final two 90-degree elbows on the 4-inch pieces and face them in.

Step 13

Wrap these final two elbow ends with tape as they will directly be touching the wall.

Tips and Warnings

  • Before screwing together each piece of piping, wrap the male piece threads with electric tape to ensure a more snug and secure fit. The pipe lengths selected are designed to fit a standard 30-inch door frame and 4-inch thick wall. The more weight that is placed on the bar when doing pull-ups, the more secure its force in holding its positions. All of these items can be found in a hardware store for less than $30.
