Hot flashes generally occur when a woman ceases to produce eggs, either because of menopause or surgery, and production of estrogen and progesterone gradually decreases. The exact cause of hot flashes is unknown, but may be related to the functioning of the hypothalamus, a gland located at the base of your brain and responsible for regulating your body's temperature. Decreasing estrogen appears to disrupt this regulatory response, causing a sudden feeling of intense body heat with sweating, flushing and increased heart rate. Certain herbs may help some women who experience this sometimes uncomfortable reaction.

Black Cohosh

The herb black cohosh treats arthritis and muscle pain, as well as symptoms related to menopause, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The roots and stems of black cohosh are used to make tea, extracts and capsules. The research evidence regarding the effectiveness of black cohosh for hot flashes is mixed, but the herb is considered relatively safe to use. If you have a pre-existing liver condition, may become pregnant or are taking prescription medications, check with your doctor before using this herb.

Red Clover

Red clover is an herb naturally rich in nutrients like calcium, magnesium and vitamin C. This versatile herb may also decrease some symptoms of menopause. Isoflavones extracted from red clover reduce the incidence of hot flashes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Red clover is available as a tea, ointment or capsule, but check with your doctor before using this herb, as it may interact with medications or medical conditions.

Dong Quai

Dong quai is also known as the "female ginseng," because it helps treat problems related to gynecological functioning. The Association of Women for the Advancement of Research and Education, or AWARE, explains that dong quai is an effective treatment for hot flashes, and can relieve pain caused by muscular contractions of the uterus. This herb appears to relieve hot flashes by regulating blood pressure, preventing the body's reaction to temperature fluctuations that can lead to hot flashes.

Motherwort

Women who use the herb motherwort frequently for a period of three months can experience relief from hot flashes. Motherwort is also useful in treating symptoms related to hormonal fluctuations such as anxiety, insomnia and stress. The effective dosage of motherwort, according to AWARE, is 15 to 25 drops taken as a tincture, between one and six times daily. Check with your doctor before using motherwort or any other herb for hot flashes.
