How to Put the Ankle Harness on the Total Gym

Most home-use Total Gym models share almost exactly the same design. The accessories it comes with and the additional accessories you can purchase are what sets each individual model apart. One of the few accessories available for and compatible with every Total Gym model is the ankle cuff/leg pulley attachment, although depending on which Total Gym model you have, you might need a slightly different version of the attachment.

Step 1

Place the leg pulley bracket, which is shaped somewhat like the letter "e" when viewed from the side and a capital "H" when viewed from the front, against the vertical support column at the high end of the Total Gym's inclined rails. Line the holes in the bracket up with the two holes in the side of the vertical support column. The bracket hooks should point toward the glideboard, open ends facing up.

Step 2

Slide a large hitch pin -- your Total Gym came with a variety of hitch pins in different sizes -- through one side of the leg pulley bracket, through the vertical support column, and out the other side of the bracket.

Step 3

Unclip the arm pulley from the metal ring on the bottom of the glideboard. On some Total Gym models, the pulley may be attached to a hook instead of a ring.

Step 4

Inspect both ends of the leg pulley rope. Depending on which Total Gym model you have, either both ends of the rope will have clips or one end will have a clip and the other will have an O-ring. If your rope has an O-ring, slide this onto the hook underneath the glideboard. If both ends of the rope have clips, clip one end to the metal ring underneath the glideboard.

Step 5

Then slide the flat side of the D-ring, which is connected to the leg pulley itself, through the leg pulley bracket. Check the pulley rope isn't twisted; flip the D-ring upside-down, if necessary, to untwist the pulley rope.

Step 6

Place the ankle harness around your foot. The buckle strap goes around the back of your heel. The ankle harness has two O-rings attached; the O-ring that is stitched securely to the strap should be on the bottom of your foot, and the O-ring that slides loosely on the strap should sit over your shoelaces.

Step 7

Lie down on the glideboard and clip the free end of the leg pulley rope to either of the O-rings on the ankle harness, depending on which exercise you're doing. If you're exercising face up on the glideboard, you'll almost always use the free-sliding O-ring. If you're lying face down, you might even clip the pulley rope to the back of the foot harness and over the buckle strap.
