Pruritus, another term for itching, can be the result of an allergic reaction; medication; or a skin condition like dry skin, psoriasis or eczema. Along with traditional skin creams, herbal remedies may also be effective for some individuals. Before using any herbal remedies for itching, talk with your doctor or dermatologist to make sure they are safe for you to use and will not interact with any treatments you are already using.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort, best known for its effects on depression, is an herbal supplement that also helps fight bacteria and viruses. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can soothe skin irritation and inflammation. This herb has been used topically to treat eczema, skin infections, wounds and minor burns, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. An oil-based preparation of St. John's wort can be applied to skin conditions, states UMMC. Ask your doctor before using a supplemental cream to ensure it will not further irritate your skin.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a bush or small tree that grows throughout North America, and the leaves, bark and twigs are used medicinally. According to Drugs.com, witch hazel has astringent properties that tighten skin proteins and promote skin healing. Eczema and other skin inflammations may be relieved with this herb because of its drying effects on the skin that can help stop itching. Drugs.com states that there is a lack of clinical studies on this herb, so ask your health care provider before using this product to make sure it is safe for you to use.

Aloe Vera

Aloe, or aloe vera, is a plant whose leaves contain a gel that can be applied directly to the skin. This gel, often found in body lotions and creams, can relieve dry skin and itching because of its moisturizing properties. It has also been used to treat skin disorders like eczema or psoriasis. MayoClinic.com suggests applying an aloe cream to affected skin three times a day for five consecutive days of the week, for up to four weeks, to help treat psoriasis.

German Chamomile

German chamomile may be added to skin creams to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and acne. More than just an herb for tea, it contains antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties and can help treat other ailments like digestive disorders and relieve muscle spasms. For itchy skin conditions, UMMC recommends using a cream with 3 to 10 percent crude chamomile content directly on the skin. Check with your dermatologist before using it, to ensure it will not make your skin condition worse.
