Becoming certified as a bodybuilding personal trainer is one way to motivate others to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Several organizations offer courses to help you become certified as a trainer for bodybuilders. Some courses can be completed online while others require class time. Obtaining certification may also result in higher pay for trainers and can provide access to certain trainer resources.
National Gym Association
The National Gym Association offers certification as a master fitness trainer. As a master trainer you are trained in all aspects of personal training, including bodybuilding coaching. This course is offered in home study format over eight weeks and you must be certified in CPR. You must also have three years of experience in the fitness field. According to the NGA's website, becoming certified by the NGA means you can work at a local gym or start your own business. At time of publication, the cost of this course was $400.
United States Sports Academy
The United States Sports Academy offers a certification program in bodybuilding that takes six weeks to complete. There are six courses in total and each course cost $150 at time of publication. Course topics include sports strength and conditioning; ergogenic aids and sports performance; sports and fitness nutrition; applied sports performance; men’s bodybuilding; and women’s bodybuilding. A different textbook is available for purchase for each course.
International Federation of Body Building and Fitness
The International Federation of Body Building and Fitness provides certification as an advanced fitness and bodybuilder training specialist. Training takes 90 days and is completed in class and online. Topics covered include anatomy, kinesiology, weight training programs, physiology and biomechanics. The organization offers this course in several languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish.
American College of Sports Medicine
The American College of Sports Medicine offers training to become a certified personal trainer. After completing this training you are qualified to prepare and implement exercise programs for individuals. Minimum program requirements include being 18 years of age, possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and CPR certification. The cost to take the exam was $279 as of spring 2011.
