The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the neck. The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating metabolism in the body, as well as the amount of calcium circulating in the blood. The thyroid secretes two iodine-containing hormones, which are called T4 and T3, or thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Conditions that effect the thyroid gland include hypothyroid and hyperthyroid syndrome, characterized by a thyroid that is under- or overactive, respectively. Some people may wish to use iodine-containing foods such as kelp to reset their thyroid.
Step 1
Get a formal test to confirm a thyroid issue. Visit a doctor and have him send you for blood testing to confirm and determine an issue with the thyroid that is underactive. In this case, kelp would be a benefit to the thyroid since it is a natural and abundant source of iodine that the thyroid needs to function normally.
Step 2
Consume kelp in the diet. Kelp, also called seaweed or bladderwack, can be consumed in the diet as a supplemental aid to increase natural amounts of iodine in the body. Kelp is also eaten as a healthy sea vegetable in foods such as sushi, salads and tea. It can be enjoyed dried as a garnish or cooked into hot dishes.
Step 3
Take a kelp or seaweed extract supplement to obtain dietary iodine. Supplemental sea vegetable sourced iodine can be taken as a thyroid support, but too much iodine can result in an overstimulated thyroid, which has equally negative effects in the body. Consult a nutritionist for proper dose and use of kelp iodine supplements.
Tips and Warnings
- Symptoms such as inability to lose weight, weight gain, cold hands and feet, insomnia and fatigue are associated with thyroid problems. Vitamin A is also needed in the body for correct absorption of dietary iodine.
