Successful high altitude hikes are often a badge of honor in the outdoor enthusiast community. Whether you're hiking a moderate altitude of 6,000 to 8,000 feet or you're attempting a higher altitude of anything above 8,000 feet, the proper preparation will go a long way in helping you feel comfortable hiking in higher elevations. Air pressure diminishes at higher elevations, while the elements can feel more severe. Plan ahead and pack carefully for any situation, and your higher elevation hike can be a success story.
Step 1
Plan your hike well in advance. A higher elevation hike should not be decided upon on a whim. You'll need to check everything from the weather to the conditions and your route. A better-planned hike means there's less left to chance for a more comfortable, safer experience. Give yourself at least two weeks to plan and prepare.
Step 2
Dress in layers in anticipation of the various weather and elements you'll experience on your hike. The heat, wind, cold and sun will all be magnified at higher elevations, so you may feel both hot and cold on your hike. Wear several layers of shirts, including a T-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, nylon jacket and coat depending on the weather and the typical temperatures of the area.
Step 3
Wear both sunscreen, hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun's harsh rays at higher elevations. When you embark on a high elevation hike, you're closer to the sun and more susceptible to sunburn and a less comfortable hike.
Step 4
Plan for an overall slower hike than lower elevation hikes. With less air pressure comes less oxygen, which means you'll fatigue more easily. Take your time and pace yourself. Give yourself plenty of time to make the ascent and move slower so you're less likely to rush and feel out-of-breath or exhausted during the hike. If necessary, take frequent breaks.
Step 5
Stay hydrated by packing enough water to drink at least 4 oz. every 15 minutes. If your hike is in cooler temperatures, you may feel less thirsty than on a hot and dry hike. Still, you'll need to drink continually to avoid dehydration during your hike.
