Although it is not possible to "spot reduce" the fat in a target area of your body, such as your obliques, you can reduce your total body fat and do specific exercises to tone the muscles in your target area. Increasing your exercise program to burn more calories and changing your diet by replacing unhealthy foods with nutrient-rich foods will help you lose weight and thus lose your oblique fat. You can do a number of exercises to tone your oblique muscles.

Bicycle

The bicycle crunch is good for toning your oblique muscles. Lie on your back with your chest slightly off the floor and your legs fully extended, keeping both feet 6 inches above the floor. Pull your right knee to your chest and cross your left shoulder over to your right knee. Slowly extend your right leg back out to your starting position and left shoulder back to starting position. Repeat on the other side with your left knee and right shoulder. Start off doing 10 on each side and increase to 15 and 20 as it becomes easier for you to do.

Stability Ball Twist

A stability ball is a good tool to help you target a specific area. The stability-ball twist targets your obliques for a great workout. Lay your back on the stability ball with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Hold a medicine ball at chest level and extend your arms out. While keeping your body on the stability ball, slowly rotate your chest to the right with your arms and medicine ball parallel to the floor. Slowly return to your starting position and repeat on your left side. Do 10 on each side and increase over time.

Roll and Curl

Place your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart in a pushup position with a stability ball underneath your feet. The tops of your feet should be resting on the ball. Slowly bend your knees to roll the ball toward the right side of your chest. Hold for two seconds, then extend your legs back out to your starting position. Repeat on your left side. Start off doing 10 on each side.

Considerations

Losing fat around the stomach area takes dedication to healthy eating and exercise. Many people store fat around their midsection, which makes losing this fat even more difficult. Toning your oblique muscles will only give you noticeable results if you work to reduce your overall body fat. You must include cardio exercise and a low-calorie, low-fat diet in your daily routine to lose your oblique fat. Always consult your doctor before beginning any diet or exercise program.
