A newly-purchased baseball glove, though neat and pristine out of the box, does not come ready for use. The leather is much too stiff for a fielder to close the glove easily around the ball when trying to make a catch. Thus, to improve both your performance and comfort, it is important to first break in the glove, which you can accompish in just a few days.

Step 1

Play catch with your glove. If you have the time, the easiest way to break in a glove is the same way you plan to use it. Field a wide range of balls, but be sure to stress the leather with high-speed throws which will loosen the leather and make it more flexible.

Step 2

Place your glove under your mattress overnight. This is a popular, time-honored way to gradually loosen the leather, particularly the crease in the middle where the ball is usually caught. However, some may not prefer this because it can make the bed uncomfortable. Regardless, a few nights of sleeping on your glove should loosen it considerably.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of glove oil to the leather. This oil will soften the leather and improve its flexibility. However, apply it sparingly because only a small amount is needed. Refrain from overcoating the leather.
