Gym teachers work with children from kindergarten through 12th grade to promote an appreciation for physical activity. The classes focus on motor skills and specific sports in the form of games and structured activity time. Securing a PE teaching job in a public school requires a specific course of study and licensing. Private schools set their own requirements and hiring standards for all teaching positions, including gym teachers. A thorough understanding of the process to become a gym teacher helps you make the best choices in your schooling and experience.

Step 1

Contact your state's department of education to verify the requirements for a state license, particularly if you plan to teach in a public school. State standards vary slightly but most require a specific type of college program, student teaching, standardized testing and a background check. Determine if there is a minimum GPA requirement so you can monitor your progress as you complete your schooling.

Step 2

Enroll in a college or university that offers an accredited education program. Look for a specific major in physical education. Health is often included in the physical education program. Expect to take classes like exercise physiology and kinesiology in addition to classes on specific sports and teaching methods.

Step 3

Earn a degree in a second educational field to improve your chances of securing a gym teaching position. Many schools combine the PE teacher job with another subject like history or science. While not required, an additional teaching area gives you more options for positions.

Step 4

Complete classes to earn a coaching certificate if you plan to coach in addition to your gym teaching responsibilities. Gym teachers often coach at least one of the school's sports teams.

Step 5

Schedule a session for the teacher standardized testing that your state requires. The PRAXIS test is often the test required by states for licensing purposes.

Step 6

Apply for your state's teaching license following the standard procedure set forth by the department of education. Submit the necessary information to complete any background checks or fingerprinting as required.

Step 7

Write a resume and cover letter template that covers your experience and education relating specifically to physical education. Work with your university's career department for assistance on refining your application materials.

Tips and Warnings

  • Volunteer to work with kids as a youth coach or sports camp counselor for additional experience to build your resume. Stay physically active outside of school and work to serve as a positive role model for your future students.
