Mustard is a condiment that is typically used to flavor hot dogs and sandwiches. This herb is not commonly used in the West for its medicinal properties. However, in traditional cultures, such as in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, mustard is also used for its healing properties. There are several types of mustard plants, including garlic, black, white and yellow mustard. The seeds of these plants are commonly used as food spices; they also may have therapeutic uses, such as stimulating metabolism and facilitating regular, healthy digestion. Consult your doctor before using mustard for any health condition.
Step 1
Add any type of mustard seeds to your cooking, baking and salad dressings to help increase metabolism. For example, sprinkle mustard seeds onto breads and pizzas. Add mustard seeds to pasta sauces, stews and soups, for both the pungent flavor and the potential health benefits. Mustard contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus as well as B-vitamins. These nutrients may help improve blood circulation and promote energy metabolism.
Step 2
Use dried mustard seeds as a tonic by soaking 1 tsp. full of seeds in about 6 ounces of water. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes to an hour. Drink this tonic to promote digestion and help heal gastrointestinal ulcers, and for its laxative and pain-reducing properties. However, ask your doctor first to be sure it's safe for you.
Step 3
Drink mustard tea three times a day. Brew the tea by adding 1 tsp. of ground black, yellow or white mustard seeds to 3 cups of boiling water. Stir the tea and let it sit for five minutes. Sip the tea to help increase metabolism and ease digestion.
Tips and Warnings
- Slowed metabolism can be the result of a nutritional deficiency; a blood test by your doctor can confirm this. Your doctor may recommend certain treatments. Do not take mustard seeds as a remedy without the supervision of your doctor.
- Mustard supplementation can be irritating. Do not overuse it or use it for extended periods. If you have a digestive disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn's disease, do not use mustard seeds medicinally, as they may cause complications. Do not use mustard seeds for a stomach ulcer without the guidance of your doctor.
