Developing a consistent golf swing takes concentration and practice. To hit the ball straight and for distance, you have to control the variables and repeat your effort on a swing-for-swing basis. Some of the factors you have to think about to include grip, stance, backswing, downswing and follow-through. You can work on your golf swing by going to the driving range and hitting practice balls as often as possible.
Step 1
Face the target squarely. If you are right-handed, your left shoulder should be facing right at the flag or the center of the fairway. Many golfers will either open or close their stance. An open stance -- your front foot is outside your back foot -- will keep you from getting the distance you want, while a closed stance -- front foot is inside your back foot -- will hurt your accuracy.
Step 2
Grip the club correctly. If you are right-handed, your left hand should be about 1/4 inch from the top of the club. Place the small finger of your right hand in the gap between your forefinger and middle finger. Align your thumbs down the shaft of the club. Grip the club firmly but don't choke it. Grip the club with the firmness of a business handshake. This is called the overlapping grip and used by the majority of golfers.
Step 3
Rotate your hips backward to start your golf swing. Your hands and arms will follow, but the hips should be the engine for your golf swing so you can get maximum rotation, allowing you to get full distance and help keep the ball straight. When your hands are above shoulder height, you are at the apex of your golf swing.
Step 4
Drive your hips back down through the ball. Again, your hands will follow. Just before you make impact with the ball, snap your right wrist. This will give you maximum distance on your shot. Keep your head down throughout the process so you are looking at the ball. Do not pick your head up until your club head has reached mid-thigh level on the follow-through. Continue with your hands until they are at shoulder height.
Tips and Warnings
- When you face an important shot, slow your swing down. Adrenaline will flow and your natural inclination will be to swing harder. Don't give into that desire. Stay at your natural pace to hit the ball consistently.
- Don't grip the club too tightly when you swing. Hold it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10.
