BASI stands for Body Arts Science International. BASI Pilates is a Pilates fitness academy that has professional standards for teaching Pilates and training and certifying Pilates instructors. BASI Pilates training centers exist in more than 20 countries, from which thousands of students graduate each year.
Pilates Background
Pilates is a system of anaerobic resistance exercise that was developed in the 1930s by German fitness expert Joseph Pilates. After a childhood of debilitating illness, Pilates became interested in body conditioning. During his time as a nurse in World War I, Pilates designed a system of exercise apparatus based on the springs on a hospital bed. Today his Pilates method is used by athletes, dance companies, health clubs and fitness enthusiasts around the world.
Rael Isacowitz
BASI was established in 1989 by Pilates trainer Rael Isacowitz. After receiving a bachelor of education degree from the Wingate Institute of Physical Education in Israel and a master of arts in dance at the University of Surrey, England, Isacowitz established Body Arts and Science International. Isacowitz's form of Pilates is founded on the tradition of Joseph Pilates and complemented with up-to-date expertise in the science of athletics and movement.
BASI Training
BASI offers a course of study for certified Pilates professionals. The program covers master-level Pilates workshops specializing in specific areas of the Pilates method. The Pilates teacher training course covers the complete repertoire of Pilates exercise, physiology, applied anatomy and theory of movement. The higher education course for BASI teacher training graduates includes advanced training, workshops and international symposiums. BASI is linked to the Pilates Method Alliance to enable students to earn continuing education credits.
Schedule
Pilates professionals who have trained elsewhere are offered a bridging course at a reduced fee. Most BASI training facilities offer training modules that can be completed over three to five months. After the final module, students are required to take a period of observation and student teaching, which usually lasts between four months to one year. The course schedule is flexible, however, and students may take longer if needed.
