Requirements for karate sparring tournaments vary from organization to organization. If you plan to compete, find a copy of the organization's rules and regulations well before the tournament date. Most organizations have either a pdf or information about how to order a print copy on their web site. The requirements for the World Karate Federation (WKF), the only karate organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee, are fairly typical of national and international level requirements.

Accreditation Cards

At registration, each competitor will be issued an accreditation card with a photograph, name, weight category, date of birth, sex and nationality. Competitors must keep the card with them during competition. Most tournaments require that the information on these cards be provided well in advance of the tournament. Check the organization's web site for sign-up information.

Uniform

Although some organizations allow a black or multi-colored gi, WKF competitors must wear a plain, white, long-sleeved karate gi without stripes or piping. A small national flag is allowed on the left breast of the jacket. Female competitors must wear a white T-shirt under the jacket. The competitor is required to bring a belt representing an earned rank as well as a red belt and a blue belt for competition.

Prohibited Objects

Jewelry is prohibited as are hard hair clips. Glasses are prohibited, but soft contact may be worn at the contestant's own risk. Ribbons, beads and other decorations are prohibited. Braces, bandages or supports must be approved in advance by the official doctor. Long fingernails or toenails are prohibited as is dirty hair and poor hygiene.

Safety Gear

All safety gear must be WKF sanctioned brands. Competitors are required to provide and use their own gear. Required gear includes: two pairs of mitts, one red and one blue; a gum shield; two pairs of shin pads, one red and one blue; and two pairs of foot protectors, one red and one blue. Cadets under the age of 16 must also wear a face mask and body protector. Women must wear a chest protector. Groin guards are not mandatory but must be WKF sanctioned if used.

Proper Deportment

Competitors are required to comply with all regulations of the tournament. They are required to display personal dignity and good sportsmanship. They may not trash talk opponents or talk back to officials. Any infringement of the rules may result in expulsion from the tournament.

Anti-Doping Requirements

To make sure competitors have not been using performance-enhancing substances, the WKF requires all competitors at WKF-sanctioned events to subject themselves to announced or unannounced drug testing either at the event or "Out-of-Competition." Testing is conducted according to the rules and procedures of the World Anti-Doping Program.
