Magnesium chelate, or magnesium amino acid chelate, is a magnesium supplement that contains the mineral magnesium bound to an organic molecule such as amino acids. Chelation increases the absorption of magnesium in the small intestine, thereby treating conditions associated with the deficiency of the mineral. Gastric disturbance and diarrhea are common side effects. More serious adverse reactions such as depression, irritability and muscle aches may rarely occur. It is important to consult a physician before using magnesium chelate supplements for the following health benefits to avoid possible side effects and drug interactions.

Bone Health

Magnesium deficiency may increase the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women by altering the calcium metabolism in the body, says the National Institute of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements. Magnesium chelate supplements may, however, improve bone density and treat osteoporosis. The dosage may depend upon the severity of the condition. Talk to your doctor to determine the dose of the supplement that is right for you.

Heart Health

MedlinePlus states that magnesium supplements including magnesium chelate may manage cardiovascular diseases by lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol, and by increasing the levels of HDL, or "good," cholesterol. It may also help treat arrhythmia of the heart. Patients with serious heart conditions may be given magnesium intravenously, but oral magnesium chelate supplements may be recommended to others to maintain their heart health. However, use the supplements only under the supervision of a physician.

Migraine

Low levels have often been associated with migraine and tension headaches. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, recommends magnesium supplements such as magnesium chelate to prevent migraine headaches. Magnesium supplements may also reduce the duration of migraine attacks and reduce the amount of medications that you may be taking for the condition. However, as in other cases, the supplements should be used only when recommended by a trained health care provider.

Diabetes

Magnesium also plays a crucial role in the release and activity of insulin, thereby influencing carbohydrate metabolism. In fact, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements, magnesium supplements may manage type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity and action. However, deficiency of magnesium is not the only cause of diabetes. It is important to evaluate the blood magnesium levels before using magnesium supplements during diabetes.

Laxatives

Magnesium supplements, according to MedlinePlus, are used as laxatives, especially before a surgery. They also manage acidity in individuals suffering from acid indigestion. Magnesium supplements do have side effects and should be used with caution.

Premenstrual Syndrome

The UMMC also states that magnesium supplements such as magnesium chelate can reduce bloating, insomnia, leg swelling and breast tenderness associated with premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. Ask your doctor whether magnesium supplements alone are enough or should be used with vitamin B6 supplements.
