Oil of oregano is a promoted as a potent purifier that offers a long list of health benefits The oil is made from the leaves and flowers of the oregano plant. The ancient Greek were said to be among the first to identify oregano oil as having medicinal qualities. Proponents claim olive oil is an effective antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic that can diminish pain and inflammation and cure certain infections.
Skin and Gum Irritation
When applied directly to the skin, oil of oregano is said to have remedial effects on skin infections and itchy skin. Oregano oil is sometimes used in combination with olive oil or coconut oil. Diluted oregano is asserted to be a treatment for irritated gum tissue.
The Mayo Clinic says there is no evidence to support claims that oregano oil and other alternative remedies such as emu oil can effectively treat inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea.
Sinus Congestion, Colds and Viruses
Proponents of oregano oil consider it to be a natural treatment for sinus or lung congestion, sore throats, colds, stomach upset and mild indigestion. Mixing a couple of drops of oregano oil with juice daily is suggested until symptoms disappear. Oregano oil is also touted as offering protection against viral infections such as measles and mumps.
According to the Mayo Clinic, oregano oil does have some antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, there it says there have been no published trials that have tested oregano oil for these purposes.
Anti-Aging Effects
Oregano oil is also advertised as an antioxidant that protects the body from free radical damage. The Mayo Clinic says these unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells can cause wrinkles. Oregano oils apparent ability to neutralize free radicals is supposed to slow the aging process by helping to fight not only wrinkles but also vision and hearing loss as well as nervous disorders. These antioxidant effects are also said to offer protection from some cancers.
