Beef does not cause stomach pains and hives in most people. If you develop stomach pain and hives every time you eat beef, you most likely have an allergy. Stomach pains and hives that form at the same time may be a sign of a severe allergic reaction that may require emergency medical attention. Stop eating beef until you can be seen by a medical professional for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.
Beef Allergy
Although beef is not considered a common food allergy, it has been reported by ABC News as a food that can trigger allergic reactions. Unlike other food allergies, a beef allergy is a hypersensitivity of the immune system to the carbohydrates found in the meat, not the proteins. When you eat beef, your immune system attacks the carbohydrates as if they were a dangerous invader, such as a virus. Immunoglobulin E antibodies are created, which trigger mast cells to produce histamine. Histamine is the main chemical that is responsible for the development of stomach pain and hives.
Stomach Pain
Stomach pain from a beef allergy forms because of inflammation that occurs in the lining of the digestive tract. As histamine is released, the soft tissue swells, restricting your digestive system, placing pressure on surrounding areas and trapping gas in the colon. Stomach pain is commonly accompanied with cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. If you develop blood in your vomit or diarrhea, you need to call your doctor immediately.
Hives
Hives are a common skin rash that forms as a result of an allergic reaction. Hives can form anywhere on your body but primarily develop on the face, arms and legs. The rash is extremely itchy and appears as red, raised welts that migrate and grow. Hives can appear in various shapes and sizes but always have defined borders. At any moment, the welts can disappear, reappear and change shape or direction without any reason. Most cases of hives begin and end suddenly. Treatment for hives includes an application of a steroid-based cream, such as hydrocortisone or corticosteroids.
Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis can occur if you're allergic to beef and you accidentally consume beef. Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction that affects the entire body and can lead to death if not properly treated. Other signs of anaphylactic shock, aside from stomach pain and hives, are shortness of breath, lightheadedness, diarrhea, a metallic taste in your mouth and a rapid pulse. Call 911 if you develop these symptoms.
