Men's slow pitch is a popular sport played by men of all ages for recreation and exercise. Many men participate in organized slow pitch softball or organize weekly games with friends. Proper grip on a softball bat influences the power of your swing. Power has a direct influence on the distance a softball will travel after making contact with the bat. Learning how to properly grip a softball bat can significantly affect your team's chances to win a game.
Step 1
Hold the bat in your less dominant hand. Hold the bat lightly with your fingers.
Step 2
Wrap your dominant hand around the bat. If you bat right-handed, position your right hand on top. Position your left hand just below your right hand. Your fingers and palms of your hands should wrap around the bat. Make a fist with your hand around the bat. Your hands should be positioned at the lower portion of the bat handle. Your hands should be near the butt of the bat --- the circular end portion of the bat. Exactly where you choose to play your hands on the bat handle is largely a matter of personal preference.
Step 3
Wrap your thumbs around the bat. Both of your thumbs should curl around your softball bat.
Step 4
Align your knuckles. Position your knuckles so that they are close together and form a straight line.
Step 5
Position the bat approximately 10 inches over your back shoulder. Take a few practice swings. If the bat is heavy, you will need a tighter grip on the bat. You are gripping the bat too tightly if you experience muscle cramping in your hands and lower arms. With a lighter bat, you can loosen your grip. This will allow you to swing the bat more quickly.
Tips and Warnings
- To get an even better grip of your softball bat, you can use softball batting gloves. These can be purchased at your local sporting goods store. They come with small rubber grips that help you better maintain control of the bat.
- To reduce the risk of head injury while batting, always wear a batting helmet.
