Problems with circulation and swelling in your legs may be the result of a condition such as intermittent claudication, or peripheral artery disease, or just poor circulation in general. To help promote healthy blood circulation and reduce swelling in your legs, certain herbs traditionally used for treating circulatory disorders may help. Keep in mind that alternative treatments should never replace conventional treatments. Talk with your doctor before using herbs for any medical condition.

Cayenne

Cayenne, or red pepper, has been used in traditional Chinese and ayurvedic medicine as an oral remedy to help treat circulatory problems, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Cayenne is also sometimes called a central circulatory stimulant. The Consumer Health website reports that using cayenne on a daily basis is beneficial, as it will aid in enhancing your body's natural cleansing mechanism. Cayenne contains a pain-relieving substance called capsaicin, which may help to reduce swelling in your legs, according to the text "Quick Access: Patient Information on Condition, Herbs and Supplements." No known harmful side effects are associated with cayenne.

Garlic

Garlic has been used as a natural remedy and food supplement for thousands of years. According to UMMC, garlic is an antioxidant, helping to protect your body from harmful compounds called free radicals. Garlic may be effective in helping to improve blood circulation. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center states that garlic is beneficial for treating circulatory disorders and high cholesterol levels. Side effects of garlic may include bad breath or bloating.

Hawthorn

Since the early 1800s, doctors have been using hawthorn, or Crataegus species, to help treat circulatory disorders and poor blood circulation, according to UMMC. Hawthorn is believed to regulate the rhythm of the heart, increasing the contraction force so blood output from your heart improves. Side effects of hawthorn are rare but may include nausea or headaches. Talk to your doctor before taking hawthorn to ensure your safety.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is widely used in traditional medicine to help relieve symptoms associated with circulatory disorders such as intermittent claudication, according to UMMC. Ginkgo biloba is believed to dilate blood vessels, which improves blood circulation in your body. No known side effects are related to the consumption of ginkgo, but some people may experience slight dizziness. Get medical clearance before taking ginkgo.
