Molasses is made from the sugar cane or sugar beet via a similar process to that used to create ordinary table sugar. Depending on when in the boiling process it is created, you can find various types of molasses -- some lighter in color and more mild in flavor, while some are darker in color and stronger in flavor.
Calories, Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium
A 1 tablespoon serving of molasses contains 58 calories, which is just under 3 percent of a typical person's daily caloric requirement. Molasses contains virtually no fat or cholesterol. It does contain 7.4 mg of sodium, which is about 0.3 percent of your daily recommended sodium intake.
Carbohydrates, Sugar and Protein
That 1 tablespoon serving of molasses contains just under 15 g of total carbohydrates; however, the molasses does not contain any dietary fiber. There are about 11 g of total sugars in the molasses, with 5.9 g of sucrose, 2.4 g of glucose and 2.6 g of sucrose. There is virtually no protein content in the molasses.
Vitamins
One tablespoon of molasses contains 0.2 mg of vitamin B3, also known as niacin, which is almost 1 percent of your daily niacin recommended intake. It also contains 0.2 mg of vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, which is 1.6 percent of your daily pantothenic acid recommended intake. There are 0.1 mg of vitamin B6 in the molasses as well -- 6.7 percent of your daily requirement. It also contains about 2.7 mg of choline and 0.2 mg of betaine.
Minerals
There are 41 mg of calcium in the molasses -- 4.1 percent of your daily requirement. There are 292.8 mg of potassium, which is 8.4 percent of your daily requirement; 0.9 mg of iron, which is 5.2 percent of your daily requirement; and 6.2 mg of phosphorus, which is 0.6 percent of your daily requirement. The molasses also contains 3.6 ug of selenium, 0.3 mg of manganese, and 0.1 mg each of zinc and copper.
