In 1992, the United States Department of Agriculture replaced the four food groups with the food guide pyramid to give Americans suggested nutritional guidelines. The pyramid is designed to give a visual understanding of each food group's daily intake.

Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group

Starting at the bottom of the pyramid is six to 11 servings of bread, cereal, rice or pasta per day.

Fruits Group

Next in the pyramid is two to four servings of variety of fruits per day.

Vegetable Group

For vegetables, three to five servings of variety are recommended per day.

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dried Beans, Eggs and Nut Group

There should be two to three servings of meat, poultry, fish, dried beans, eggs and nut per day, preferably lean meats.

Dairy Group

There should be two to three servings of milk, yogurt and cheese per day, preferably low fat.

Fats Group

At the top of the pyramid, a small amount of fats, oils and sweets per day is recommended.
