Whether you take an indoor cycling class at the gym or have thought about purchasing your own indoor cycling bike, you probably know that they are not the same as a regular exercise bikes. Indoor cycling bikes are created to burn the optimal amount of calories during a high-energy workout. Created by Johnny Goldberg in the 1980s, the bike is set up to help you attain a calorie blasting workout that is not for the faint of heart.
Stance
One of the first things you'll notice about an indoor cycling bike is that it is only semi-upright. While other exercise bikes look more like street bikes so you can ride in an upright position, indoor cycling bikes allow you to ride from a bent position, with your forearms placed on the handlebars. This power position allows you to keep your back comfortable during a 45 to 60 minute indoor cycling class. The stance also allows you to pedal at maximum power to get the most out of your workout.
Flywheel
Often exercise bikes have a flywheel design that lets the wheels continue turning, even when the pedals have stopped. Indoor cycling bikes do not have the flywheel construction, which means the wheel only moves as long as the pedals move. This offers a superior workout since your legs have to constantly move in order to rotate the wheel. Even when you slow down, the pedals will continue to move until the wheel stops, so your legs are still moving and you're still burning calories for the best workout possible.
Adjustability
Indoor cycling bikes are fully adjustable for the most comfort during an often grueling workout. The seat can be adjusted up or down depending on your height, while the handlebars can also be adjusted for better comfort. In general, your seat is in the right position if it meets your hip when standing beside the bike, while handlebar adjustments are a personal preference.
Brand
There are several brands of indoor cycling bikes designed for use in group indoor cycling classes. Different fitness facilities will offer different classes and equipment.
