How to Do Crunches With the Ab Roller Plus

Fitness equipment like the Ab Roller Plus may seem downright archaic when compared to the newer options that are currently available, but the device is supposed to help users maintain proper posture while doing a crunch. With your body in the optimum position, your crunches will be safer and more effective. Whether you are using an Ab Roller Plus that is secondhand or new, proper form will give you the best results.

Step 1

Position the Ab Roller Plus over an exercise mat so that the mat runs lengthwise from the device. Since you'll be using the Ab Roller Plus while lying on the ground, use a towel or mat to protect your back from the hard floor.

Step 2

Lower yourself onto the mat between the bars of the Ab Roller Plus. Place your head and neck on the supplied headrest and place your hands on the side bars. Your hands should touch the bars lightly. Never push on them to propel your crunches.

Step 3

Inhale and crunch forward. As you crunch, pull your belly button into your spine to keep your abdominal muscles properly engaged for the duration of the crunch. Lightly press the bars as you crunch forward so the rounded bars roll forward. Stop when your torso is at a 45-degree angle from your legs.

Step 4

Exhale as you lower yourself down. Concentrate on slow, precise movements, rather than jerking your body in order to complete the crunch.

Step 5

Repeat 12 to 15 times in order to complete a set. Complete three sets or until your abs are fatigued.
