How to Heal Under-Eye Wrinkles

One of the first signs of aging that eventually affects everyone are wrinkles under and around the eyes. Wrinkles form as the elastin and collagen in the skin begin to break down with age. Luckily, you don't have to accept wrinkles without a fight. There are many different treatment options on the market that can help you look and feel younger by lessening or completely removing wrinkles around the eyes.

Step 1

Try a specially developed eye cream. One of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to help treat eye wrinkles is with a specially fortified eye cream. Some of the most common eye creams for this purpose are tretinoin (Retin-A) and prescription-strength Renova or Avita. When looking for eye creams, look for products that contain ingredients such as antioxidants (coenzyme Q10), forms of vitamin A such as retinol, and other vitamins such as vitamin C.

Step 2

Look into fractional laser resurfacing. If eye creams are not enough to help relieve your eye wrinkles, you may want to try a laser treatment, such as Erbium laser resurfacing or CO2 laser resurfacing, which help smooth eye wrinkles by dissolving molecular bonds. CO2 laser surfacing can take as much as a month to heal from, so it is important to research healing times before undergoing treatment.

Step 3

Try Botox. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Botox is by far one of the most popular cosmetic products for helping to get rid of wrinkles around the eyes. Botox works by injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin A, which binds to the nerve endings of the muscles around the eyes and prevents them from activating. It is these muscles that can contribute to the wrinkles around the eyes.

Step 4

Experiment with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are injected like Botox, but instead of working on the muscles, they work to plump up the space under the skin. This keeps the skin tight beneath the wrinkles, and stretches wrinkles away. The most common dermal fillers are Restylane and Juvederm.

Step 5

Contact a local plastic surgeon. When all else fails, cosmetic surgery procedures such as blepharoplasty can also be used on eye wrinkles. Blepharoplasty surgically reshapes the eyelids by removing any excess tissue and pulling the remaining tissue tight. This pulls wrinkles out of the skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always talk to your doctor, dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon about possible side effects before taking part in any treatment method for removing wrinkles around the eyes.
