Psyllium is a type of soluble fiber that travels through the gastrointestinal tract without being digested. The husks of the psyllium seeds are harvested from the herb Plantago ovata, which is native to India. Psyllium husks are available over the counter from many manufacturers in powder form.
Constipation
The soluble fiber in psyllium husk powder is great for treating constipation. This type of fiber increases the stool bulk and also has a stool-softening effect. Both of these characteristics move stool along the gastrointestinal tract. The stool-softening effects of psyllium husk powder requires drinking plenty of fluids, about 64 oz. The added bulk psyllium husk powder stimulates the walls of the intestines to contract, which helps lead to a bowel movement.
Cholesterol
Psyllium husk powder is one of several types of soluble fiber that is effective in lowering total blood cholesterol levels, as well as LDL cholesterol, which is known as "bad" cholesterol because it leads to buildup of cholesterol in blood vessel walls. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that the cholesterol-lowering effects of psyllium require eating a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet. To have the maximum effect on cholesterol levels, ask your doctor about combining psyllium husk powder, a low-fat low-cholesterol diet and cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.
Weight Control
Another benefit of taking psyllium husk powder is that it can help you lose and/or maintain a healthy weight by helping you control how much you eat. Taking psyllium powder supplements may help you feel fuller, and keep hunger cravings from driving you back to the kitchen for after-meal snacks.
Possible Adverse Effects
Psyllium husk powder may cause adverse effects. If you are allergic to psyllium, do not take psyllium husk powder. If after taking this powder you have a rash, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat, NYU Langone Medical Center recommends seeking help from a medical professional. Additionally, if you have, or suspect you may have, an intestinal blockage, taking this powder is not advised. Milder side effects of psyllium husk powder include gas and bloating.
