Pilates, the form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, uses slow, precise movements in order to build lean muscle. When practicing Pilates, you'll complete slower exercise with fewer repetitions, rather than fast repetitions that are often common with aerobics. Although you can take a Pilates class at your local gym, practicing Pilates at home may prove to be more convenient and cost-effective if you plan to make Pilates a way of life and exercise. Having the right equipment at home means you'll always have gear on hand to practice the Pilates exercises.

Pilates Mat

For the most bang for your Pilates buck, invest in a good-quality Pilates mat. A Pilates mat, much like a yoga mat, gives you better traction while performing exercises in certain positions and poses. Pilates mats are generally thick and soft, since some exercises require you to lie on your back or belly. A good Pilates mat will have a slightly sticky underside to prevent slipping. A Pilates mat is a must-have when it comes to equipping your own Pilates studio.

Exercise Ball

Some of the Pilates exercises rely on creating resistance in order to make the most of your slow and controlled repetitions. An exercise ball is one of the most versatile pieces of exercise equipment, so it makes for a wise investment at home. With an exercise ball, you can add extra weight to your exercises and create more difficult positions, and you can even use the ball as a way to ensure that you exercise with the proper form.

Pilates Circle

The Pilates circle was used first by Joseph Pilates himself. It's a circle made of stretchy resistance bands. The circle is one continuous band that can be used in a variety of ways. A circle may be placed around the ankle while doing side leg lifts, or used as a way to tone and tighten arms during bicep curls. Modern-day Pilates instructors, such as Mari Winsor, still use the Pilates circle to help clients learn to find their core and become more used to the slow and precise movements of Pilates.

Resistance Bands

In addition to the Pilates circle, using straight resistance bands in your home gym can help you attain a more versatile workout. You can anchor resistance bands to doors with the proper equipment to target your legs and arms. A resistance band can be tied in a myriad of ways for Pilates exercises like "The Hundred." Resistance bands typically come in three levels: light, medium and heavy. Choose one based on your fitness level and purchase higher resistance levels when necessary.
