Hawthorn extract, or Crataegus species, is an herbal supplement obtained from the hawthorn plant, a thorny shrub that belongs to the rose family. Since the 1800s, hawthorn extract has been used to treat heart problems, such as high blood pressure, and respiratory illnesses. Hawthorn extract may include the leaves, berries or flowers of the hawthorn plant, although most modern varieties contain the leaves and flowers, which the University of Maryland Medical Center notes contain the highest concentration of flavonoids.
Properties
Hawthorn extract contains antioxidants, specifically oligomeric procyandins, or OCPs, and quercetin. These antioxidants are believed to destroy free radicals, which are unstable molecules that cause damage to your cell membranes and change the structure of your DNA. The action of free radicals has been linked with the aging process as well as the development of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Hawthorn Extract and Blood Pressure
Although several studies conclude that hawthorn extract can improve heart function in those with heart failure, the use of hawthorn for high blood pressure has not been studied exclusively. While mainly people assume that hawthorn extract can lower blood pressure because of its heart-healthy properties, not enough research has been done to make conclusive statements.
One study published in "The British Journal of General Practice" did find that hawthorn extract may lower blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes who were also taking prescription medications. Study participants took 1,200 mg of hawthorn daily for 16 weeks and had lower blood pressure than those taking a placebo.
Side Effects
When taken within recommended dosages, most people tolerate hawthorn well without experiencing any side effects. Recommended dosages generally range from 160 to 1,800 mg daily. When side effects do occur, the most common include headaches, nausea and heart palpitations. If you experience pain or extreme exhaustion during exercise while taking hawthorn, contact your doctor immediately.
Warnings
Heart disease and high blood pressure are serious conditions that should not be self-treated. Always discuss any potential risks or side effects of hawthorn extract with your health care provider before taking hawthorn extract. If you are taking medications for irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure, such as beta blockers or calcium channel blockers, you should not take hawthorn extract because it can increase the action of these drugs and lead to dangerously low blood pressure. Hawthorn extract supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
