Hockey goalies train extensively to learn how to cut down angles and improve reflexes. It is their job to prevent you from scoring, and putting the puck in the net is rarely an easy task. Increasing the speed of your shots is an effective way to keep a goalie off balance and get the puck by him more often.
Step 1
Strengthen your wrists and forearms by performing exercises such as wrist curls and reverse curls as part of your workout routine. Strong wrists and forearms help you snap the puck with more speed.
Step 2
Position the puck near the heel of your stick when taking a wrist shot, then let it roll toward the middle of the blade before you release the shot. Start with all your weight on the back leg and transfer it to the front during the shot.
Step 3
Strike the puck between the heel and middle of the blade when taking a slap shot. Hit the ice with your blade just before it makes contact with the puck.
Step 4
Use a hockey stick with a flexible shaft so it bends as you take your shot. This creates a whipping motion that increases speed.
Step 5
Follow through toward your target so your shot goes where you want it to go and all your energy is directed in the right place for optimum speed.
