It is important to include some form of resistance training in any exercise routine that you follow, as it helps build muscle, burn fat and increase strength. Many people believe that weights are solely for those involved in bodybuilding or sports training, and stretch bands are more suited to rehabilitation programs. However, stretch bands and weights can be used together as part of an effective routine, although each have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Building Muscle
In order to build muscle and increase strength, you need to perform resistance training by using progressively heavier weights in order to continuously stress your muscles and nervous system. This can be accomplished with both weights and stretch bands. However, with stretch bands, you are limited with the amount you can resist, as bands only go up to a certain resistance, whereas you can increase free weights indefinitely. Compound lifts like deadlifts, squats and presses are also better suited to free weights.
Convenience
To train with weights, you either need to have access to a gym or have weights set at home, which can be costly and take up space. Stretch bands, however, take up very little space and are extremely light. They are ideal if you wish to work out at home or want to train while you are on the road.
Technique
To begin with, it can be very difficult to learn technique when training with free weights, particularly on multijoint exercises. However, stretch bands allow you to slow down any exercise, and perform it in a much more controlled manner, which may make learning a new exercise slightly easier. You can also use a very light resistance band to start with, so that you can concentrate on lifting with perfect form.
Which is Better?
One method is not necessarily better than the other, as both have their advantages and disadvantages. Bands are more useful if you have a limited amount of space to train in or travel a lot, and they work well when performing isolation exercises such as curls and lateral raises. Free weights are a better choice if building muscle and strength is your main goal or you are a more advanced trainee. However, you should aim to include both bands and weights in your workouts.
