Having the ability to deceive hitters is a major factor in the success of a baseball pitcher. No matter the speed of your fastball, good hitters will catch up to it and pound it if you don’t throw any other pitches. Throwing breaking balls like curves and sliders is essential to keep hitters off balance. Different techniques help you increase the break of your pitches for maximum effect.
Step 1
Hold the ball with your middle finger against the inside of a seam for more leverage. Keep your index finger beside the middle finger and thumb under the ball, as with other pitches.
Step 2
Twist your wrist upon release of the ball to get the maximum amount of spin possible. Maintain the same arm speed and windup as a fastball, but turn your hand inward when your arm is in the 90-degree “L” position.
Step 3
Shorten your stride toward the plate slightly so your arm is a little in front of your body when you release the pitch.
Step 4
Release the ball closer to your body than a fastball to achieve more resistance on your middle finger and more spin on the ball.
