Both skateboarders and rollerskaters utilize pads to keep their knees protected during high speed tricks and maneuvers. While protective knee pads may look similar at first glance, certain models are equipped with specialized features. According to X Sports Protective, knee pads for skating come in both a hard and soft shell design. While hard shell models provide increased protection, they can hinder your movement. Choosing the correct size of knee pad will allow you to feel comfortable when attempting new and more difficult maneuvers.

Step 1

Bend your knees slightly. Wrap the measuring tape around the circumference of your knee and record the measurement in inches.

Step 2

Choose small sized protective pads if your knees measured 12 to 13.75 inches. Select medium sized protective pads if your knees measured 13.75 to 15.25 inches. Opt for large sized protective pads if your knees measured over 15.25 inches.

Step 3

Insert your foot into the tubular sleeve of the knee pads. Slide the knee pads up your leg to cover your kneecap. Fasten the Velcro straps to secure the protective pads in place.

Step 4

Bend your knees to a 90-degree angle to test the size of the protective pads. Upgrade the size of the knee pads if you have difficulty bending your knees.
