Feeling faint after exercise, or experiencing dizziness, can be an indication that your body is not prepared for certain physical activities. Dizziness occurs when you are not getting enough blood to your brain. According to MedlinePlus, feeling dizzy or faint is usually not serious but you should always consult your doctor to eliminate possible medical causes. The feeling may be related to low blood sugar, dehydration or overheating related to exercise.

Low Blood Sugar

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a condition that occurs when you don't have enough glucose in your blood to fuel your body. The condition happens in diabetics who use insulin or other diabetes medications but can also happen in people who are not diabetic. One of the symptoms of low blood sugar is dizziness or a feeling that you might faint. Go Ask Alice of Columbia University's Health Services recommends eating a snack before you exercise. Eat a piece of fruit or a few crackers if you have less than an hour before exercise. You can have a more substantial snack like a bagel with jam if you have at least two hours before physical activity.

Hydration

You can become dehydrated when you exercise because of excessive sweating, especially in hot weather. Dizziness can be a symptom of dehydration. Drinking 16 oz. of water two hours before exercise promotes hydration and allows your body to rid itself of excess fluid. It is also good for your body to drink water during exercise. The more vigorously you exercise and the more weight that is lost requires more frequent fluid consumption. If you exercise longer than 60 minutes, consume a sports drink. This type of fluid includes glucose and electrolytes that are good for your body during exercise.

Avoid Overheating

If you exercise in hot weather or a hot environment, heat stroke is a risk. It happens when your body is exposed to heat for a long period of time and you do not sweat enough to lower your temperature. Symptoms of heat stroke can include dizziness and disorientation that can lead to fainting. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of the ways to prevent heat stroke is to drink plenty of fluids. In addition, take frequent breaks and get out of hot weather if you feel overheated.

Safety Tips

Any time you feel faint after exercise despite following the measures above, see your doctor to rule out a serious medical condition. If you do feel faint, lie or sit down immediately so you don't fall. If you sit down, place your head between your knees. When the feeling passes, stand up slowly to decrease the chances of feeling faint again.
