Dr. Mehmit Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon and television show host. His anti-aging diet is officially called the "90-Day Live Longer, Feel Younger Diet" and is an extension of his book "YOU: ON a diet plan." Dr. Oz constructed the diet to promote health and discourage aging. The diet involves eliminating specific foods while incorporating physical activities such as yoga, walking, resistance training and stretching.
Sugar
Sugar is the first food on Dr. Oz's elimination list. Eating sugary foods causes your blood sugar to bounce from one extreme to the other. Sugar initially raises your blood sugar, causing insulin levels to spike. Insulin instigates the movement of sugar from your bloodstream into your body, lowering your blood sugar again. After insulin has done its job, you experience the sensations of fatigue and hunger that are often called crashing. Dr. Oz recommends eating sugar with fat or fiber, such as a piece of fruit. The combination of fat or fiber with sugar results in more moderate changes in blood sugar and will keep you feeling full longer.
High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Dr. Oz recommends eliminating foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup because it blocks a hormone called leptin from communicating with your brain. Leptin is produced by your fat cells and tells your brain that you have enough energy and aren't hungry. Neutralizing leptin may lead to excess calorie consumption and weight gain.
Enriched Wheat Flour
According to Dr. Oz, enriched wheat flour isn't very nutritious. The flour has to be enriched because nutrients are lost during the initial production process. Dr. Oz recommends using whole grain flours, which are rich in vitamins and minerals that are crucial for health and metabolism. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, consuming whole grains may decrease your risk of heart disease.
Fats and Oils
Saturated fats and hydrogenated oils are also on Dr. Oz's elimination list. Saturated fats, such as lard and butter, are solid at room temperature. According to the American Heart Association, consuming too much saturated fat puts you at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Hydrogenated oils are also called trans fats. Oils are usually liquid at room temperature, but hydrogenated oils are solid.
Considerations
Dr. Oz also recommends that you incorporate certain healthy foods as part of the "90-Day Live Longer, Feel Younger Diet." He recommends consuming pomegranates and tomato sauce because of their antioxidant effect and spinach, garlic, nuts and olive oil for overall health. He also recommends getting at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
