Hockey skates need to fit well, especially in the toes. Skates that fit poorly in the toes can lead to blisters, calluses, corns and subungual hematomas, or bleeding under the toenails. The toe cap of your skates protects the toes from lacerations and high-impact collisions. You cannot usually stretch a toe cap, which is made of plastic or composite materials.

Step 1

Visit a hockey skate specialty store or your local sporting goods store during the middle of the day, when your feet are at their largest. This helps ensure a comfortable, well-fitted skate.

Step 2

Bring socks you would normally wear while playing or practicing hockey.

Step 3

Lace the skates as if you were heading on the ice. For comfort, your toes should hardly touch the cap. Your heel should fit snugly.

Step 4

Try on different widths. Hockey skates range in size from a standard width to extra wide. If you experience tightness around your toes and the top of your foot, try a wider skate. This will prevent you from attempting to stretch a material that cannot be easily expanded.

Step 5

Walk around the store to ensure your skates fit properly. Check out the return policy before buying. If the skates are used, you will likely not be able to return them.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always try on skates to ensure they fit properly. Fits may vary by brand.
  • If you are concerned about size and fit in the toes and upper foot, take your skates to a podiatrist or sports medicine doctor. He can help determine if you have properly fitting skates as well as diagnose any underlying foot conditions that may cause discomfort while skating.
