The prostate gland is located in the male reproductive tract and surrounds a portion of the bladder and urethra. The prostate is part muscle, part gland, and it is composed of three distinct lobes. Certain nutritional supplements have historically been used to help support the health and function of the prostate gland. Check with your doctor before using supplements to treat your prostate.
Prostate Problems in Men
Prostate gland-related problems and symptoms are common in middle-aged and elderly men. According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, the leading prostate problem in men under the age of 50 is a condition called prostatitis, or prostate inflammation. In men over the age of 50, the most common prostate problem is benign prostatic hyperplasia -- a condition in which the prostate becomes bigger. Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer in older men.
Nutritional Supplements
Certain nutritional supplements may contribute to improved prostate health and function. However, not all supplements used to boost prostate health have been extensively studied using current scientific testing methods. In his book "Therapeutic Herb Manual," herbal medicine expert Ed Smith states that the following supplements may promote healthy circulation to and within the prostate, help drain drain congested prostate tissue fluids and reduce prostate-related pain: thuja leaf, cleavers, pipsissewa, nettle root and saw palmetto berry.
Supplement in Focus
Cleavers is a dietary supplement that may be beneficial in supporting the health and function of the prostate. Smith notes that cleavers is helpful in treating any irritation or inflammation of the urinary tract as well as benign prostatic hyperplasia and other prostate problems. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," reports that cleavers has also historically been used in treating bladder and kidney problems, eczema and fibrocystic tissue.
Additional Information
Prostate conditions are exceedingly common among American men. If you develop symptoms that may be associated with prostate problems, it is wise to contact a doctor to be properly evaluated, diagnosed and treated. Some prostate conditions, such as prostate cancer, must be treated in a timely fashion. Dietary supplements should always be used judiciously and with the same degree of caution used when taking prescription medications.
