Angiotensin-converting enzyme, or ACE, inhibitors help treat heart disease and hypertension. These medications relax the arteries by preventing the action of a hormone that causes constriction of the blood vessels. However, ACE inhibitors can cause side effects such as chronic coughing and may be not be suitable for all patients. Your doctor may alternatively prescribe a calcium channel blocker. These medications also help to lower blood pressure and reduce the force of the heart's contractions. They work by preventing calcium from entering the cells of the heart and blood vessels, relaxing and dilating the arteries for increased blood flow. Your doctor will determine the type and dosage of medications to treat your cardiovascular condition.

Step 1

See your primary care doctor or cardiologist for your regular health check-up and prescription refill. Your doctor may order a blood test to determine whether your cholesterol levels are under control. Inform your doctor of any side effects you have experienced while taking your prescription medication. Your doctor may decide to change your hypertension medication to a calcium channel blocker. You may be prescribed more than one medication for your cardiovascular health.

Step 2

Fill your prescription for your calcium channel blocker medication. Carefully read the information label on the drugs. Consult your pharmacist or doctor if you are not clear about how to take this medication and its effects. If your doctor advises you to switch medications, stop taking ACE inhibitors before you begin your dosage of calcium channel blockers.

Step 3

Take your daily dosage of calcium channel blocker medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This medication can be taken with or without food. If you miss a dose, continue taking the medication the next day, but do not double your daily dose. Take your calcium channel blocker at the same time each day to help you avoid forgetting to take it.

Step 4

Get your calcium channel blocker prescription refilled before the medication is finished completely. You must take this medication regularly for the most benefit. Do not stop taking your calcium channel blocker or change your dosage without the advice of your doctor. Continue using this medication even if you feel well; high blood pressure often does not cause symptoms.

Tips and Warnings

  • Your doctor may prescribe a calcium channel blocker in conjunction with other blood pressure or cholesterol medications. There are a variety of calcium channel blocker drugs which differ in their action on the body. They are used to treat angina or chest pain, arrythmias or irregular heartbeat and hypertension.
  • Grapefruit juice can alter the effects of calcium channel blockers, putting you risk of heart disease and stroke. Do not drink grapefruit juice at all if you are taking these medications. Do not take other over-the-counter or herbal medications without informing your doctor. These drugs can adversely interact with your prescription medication.
