There are several types of online courses available that are related to the hospitality industry, from online culinary arts degrees to restaurant management.
Virginia College
Virginia College offers an online associate's degree in culinary arts for students who are interested in working in restaurants or the food industry. This program focuses on training students to work with various types of food and supplies while understanding sanitation and safety issues and meeting the terms of local regulations for food establishments. Incoming students must have completed some coursework in cooking labs, working with pastries, baking and food presentation.
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh has an online program for students who are interested in careers in culinary management. In order to qualify for this program, you must have completed a culinary apprenticeship. You may also qualify if you have taken some college-level courses in cooking labs, such as culinary or baking techniques. The program is 180 credits and results in a bachelor's degree. Some of the courses involved include event management, etiquette, food and beverage control and wine and spirits operations.
Ashford University
Ashford University delivers a bachelor of arts in service management degree. The format is entirely online and you may choose to specialize in restaurant enterprise management. This concentration teaches students the skills to manage the fast pace of restaurants. Typical coursework includes service operations, food and beverage control, menu planning and sanitation and safety.
Stratford Career Institute
The Stratford Career Institute offers training that results in a certificate in hotel and restaurant management. This course is online and allows you to work at your own pace; the books and materials are delivered to your home. Classes include such subjects as restaurant operations, issues in food service, time management and navigating the hospitality industry. The program prepares you to work in or manage a restaurant, but actual cooking classes are not part of the curriculum.
