During exercise it is normal for blood pressure to raise due to increased exertion. The most important thing that our heart needs to do it continue to get blood oxygenated and pump this blood through circulation of our body. A low pulse rate, or heart rate would mean you are not working at an intense level. Blood pressure is the pressure of blood coming out of the arteries. If it gets to high or too low, major problems may arise.
Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood coming out of the arteries and pushed through the entire body. If we have a higher blood pressure, this causes the heart to work harder. When we have a healthy blood pressure everything is running smoothly and blood gets where it needs to go without the heart overexerting itself. Normal blood pressure is considered 120 mmHg/80 mmHg. High blood pressure, which is also considered hypertension 140 to 159 mmHg/90 to 99 mmHg at level 1 and raises to 160+mmHg/100+mmHg at level 2.
Blood Pressure During Exercise
Our blood pressure never stays the same. It can change depending on whether or not you are active, sleeping, excited, or nervous. Blood pressure increases due to the increased demands. Systolic blood pressure, or the contraction phase of the heart raises, why diastolic remains steady. This is due to our heart only taking in blood at a fixed rate. Systolic increases because heart rate increases and blood must be pumped out quicker.
Hypotension
Hypotension is low blood pressure. This occurs when blood pressure is much lower leaving the heart than normal. While average blood pressure is 120 mmHm/80 mmHg, normal can also be considered 90 mmHg/60 mmHg. From the low end, a 20 mmHg drop can cause significant problem. Being hypotensive can be a sign of serious heart disease, and ischemic dysfunction of the myocardium. If hypotension is occurring during exercise increases the risk for ventricular fibrillation during exercise.
Ventricular Fibrillation
Ventricular fibrillation is a serious condition where the heart gets an abnormal rhythm. This condition can be life threatening. Ventricular fibrillation need immediate medical attention. If you are experiencing extremely high blood pressure or extremely low blood pressure, it is recommended that you see your doctor immediately, due to these conditions being life threatening.
