Maintaining the pH balance in the body is largely regulated by the body itself. If the blood were to become too acid or too alkaline, the body could no longer function correctly and would die. A diet that is based largely on alkaline foods is supportive of this natural ability to maintain a healthy pH balance but not essential for survival. A diet that is based largely on acid-forming foods does have a higher rate of inflammation, allergy symptoms and fatigue, according to Dr. Elson Haas in his book, ''Staying Healthy With Nutrition.''

Step 1

Drink herbal tea. Tea that is made from herbs carries the alkalizing quality of the herbs. Provided that a natural sweetener such as stevia or agave nectar is used, the tea possesses alkalizing qualities. Dairy, white sugar and artificial sweeteners such as Splenda are acid-forming foods that will work against the desired alkalizing effects of the herbal tea.

Step 2

Use herbs to flavor foods and recipes. Swap out margarine, sauces and gravies in traditional dishes for seasonings and herbs. Toppings that are high in fat are acid-forming in the body. Additionally, vinegar-based condiments such as mustard, relish and ketchup are also acid-forming foods. Using herbs on a regular basis as part of a balanced alkaline-based diet helps support maintenance of a healthy pH balance in the body.

Step 3

Take herbal supplements. Herbs can be used as supplements to support pH balance in the body. Herbal supplements are used for all kinds of ailments, such as trouble sleeping and inflammation. Since herbs are considered alkaline, using them supports bodily maintenance of pH balance. Some herbs may have contraindications when taken with certain prescription medications. Talk to a doctor or nutritionist before taking herbal supplements.
