Baseball hats are a staple of the baseball uniform, with each player, except the catcher, wearing a cap when out on the field. Baseball hats were initially used to protect the players from the heat and shield their eyes from the sun. They still have that utilitarian function today, but they have also become a fashion item

Fitted Caps

Fitted caps are most commonly worn by professional baseball players. Fitted hats are typically made of 100 percent wool, with a sturdy design that prominently displays the team logo on the front. They come in sizes ranging from 6 3/4 to 8, with those sizes correlating to head circumference. To find out your fitted hat size, measure the circumference of your head, just above your eyebrows. Take the circumference of your head in centimeters, and divide that by eight for your fitted cap size. For example, if your forehead measures 56 centimeters, you should wear a size 7 hat. If your forehead measures 64 centimeters, you should wear a size 8.

Adjustable Hats

Adjustable hats are more common and generally less expensive than fitted caps, partly because they are often made with less expensive materials, such as cotton. But they are also available in wool and mesh. Instead of coming in sizes, as fitted caps do, these caps have adjustable closures in the back. Snaps, buckles or Velcro-style strips are used to make the cap larger or smaller, depending on the wearer's head size.

Stretch Hats

Some hats are available with an elastic headband. These caps are often called stretch fit or flex fit. They have the fitted look that many people like. Some stretch-fit hats are one size fits all, while others come in general sizes, such as small/medium and large/extra-large.

Other Versions

There are other varieties of baseball hats, such as trucker hats, which have a cotton or wool front and mesh sides and back for ventilation. These hats have become a fashion symbol of sorts in recent years. The visor is a version of the baseball cap. It's really just a visor. These are often worn by golfers and those who play beach volleyball.
