Having excess belly fat hanging over your waistline can be uncomfortable. Although it is not possible to lose fat in one area of the body, you can flatten your belly through decreasing your total body fat percentage. Diet alone is not enough to shed body fat; you need to include exercise. Incorporating a healthy diet into your exercise regimen will help you trim inches off of your midsection.

Eat Natural Foods

Consume foods in their most natural form to promote fat loss. If it comes from the earth, flies, swims or grazes, it is yours to eat. Shop for foods like lean meats, Greek yogurt, vegetables, whole grains, cottage cheese, good fats like avocado and seeds, skinless poultry, fish and eggs. When at the grocery store, shop the outer perimeter of the store to find fresh produce, dairy and meats.

Cut Back on Sodium

Decrease your sodium intake to eliminate midsection bloating due to water retention. Season your meals with spices and herbs instead of using the salt shaker. Add flavor to salads or soups with fruits and vegetables. Pass up on high-sodium processed and canned foods like bacon, frozen dinners and pre-seasoned foods.

Limit Dairy Consumption

Cut back on your dairy consumption to decrease belly bloat resulting from lactose intolerance. The sugars or lactose in milk are sometimes difficult for the body to digest, which can result in gas and bloating. Switch from cow's milk to rice, soy or almond milk. Prepare your meals with lactose-free cheeses like soy cheese or vegan cheese.

Eliminate Stress

Stress can trigger the overproduction of the hormone cortisol, which is linked to weight gain in the midsection, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Decrease your stress levels through regular exercise, meditation or yoga. Unwind at night with a warm bath or take time to read before bed.
