The french fry is a quintessentially American food. You can find french fries on the menus of fast food chains and fine dining establishments alike. French fries have a reputation for being unhealthy, likely because many restaurants have used trans fats to fry them. Even though some states have moved to ban or restrict the use of trans fats, fries remain a high-fat food. Baking french fries lowers their fat content.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray the baking sheets with cooking spray.

Step 2

Wash and dry the potatoes.

Step 3

Peel the potatoes, if desired. Cut each potato lengthwise into half-inch thick "disks." Stack the disks on the cutting board and cut lengthwise into half-inch sticks.

Step 4

Toss the potatoes with olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl.

Step 5

Arrange the potato sticks on the baking sheets in a single layer.

Step 6

Place baking sheets in the oven on two different racks. Bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes until browned. Turn the fries over halfway through baking. Switch the position of the baking sheets for even cooking.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try tossing your potatoes with an herb seasoning or chili powder instead of salt and pepper for a different flavor.
